Medical Device Packaging: The Materials

A few weeks back we shared a post about how important it is for medical device manufacturers to carefully consider the packaging stage when bringing a new product to market.  Just as important as the design, is the material selection for new medical device packaging.  So, as a follow up to that piece, UFP Technologies would like to share with you some information about its own specialty packaging materials for medical devices and what these packaging material solutions can offer you. UFP Technologies is at the forefront of using advanced materials for medical and clean room packaging applications.  The following is information on the unique materials UFP Technologies has access to:

1) Cross-Linked Polyethylene Foams:

Properties: UFP Technologies utilizes cross-linked polyethylene foams that are impregnated with nitrogen providing a non-toxic, hypoallergenic, latex-free solution.

Uses: From packaging orthopedic implants to providing comfort to a patient during surgery, these foam materials can come in direct contact with skin and be used in operating rooms.

2) Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Films:

Properties: The TPU family of films offers excellent water, fungus and abrasion resistance. TPU films are of a rubber-like elasticity that are flame retardant in a full range of opacity. Films for Medical Device ManufacturingThese materials meet USP Class VI standards for use with medical applications and compliant with multiple FDA regulations.

Uses: TPU films are used extensively with sterile barrier systems in protecting orthopedic implants, surgical screws and other medical devices.  We can combine TPU films with other materials such as foams and other specialty materials to form unique composites.

3) Rigid Plastics:

Type: PETG & PETERigid Plastics

Properties: clear, tough, thermoplastic materials that are easy to thermoform.

Uses:  Ideal for producing trays, clamshells, and other packaging applications for medical devices.

With access to an array of sterile foams, thermoplastic polyurethane films and PET plastics, UFP Technologies can provide our customers with a complete spectrum of materials to develop unique packaging systems.
